Venezuelan authorities launched an investigation on Monday into the shooting death of the Indian chief who campaigned for the demarcation of indigenous lands. Romero, a leader of the Yukpa tribe, was fatally shot on Sunday along a highway in the western state of Zulia, according to the government.

    The Indian chief had repeatedly requested protection from the government as he campaigned for indigenous rights in a largely lawless and violent region.
