UAE blames “sophisticated” tanker attack on state actor

Without naming Iran, the United Arab Emirates on Friday told the UN Security Council that the “sophisticated and coordinated” attack on four tankers off its coast last month is likely a work of a state actor.

The report of the UAE-led investigation, which was presented to a closed session of the UN Security Council in New York, showed restraint in pinning the blame on any country unlike U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton, who accused Iran for the May 12 attack without presenting any evidence, notes the BBC.

Although the UAE is certain that the offensive was executed by Iran’s surrogates, it may have refrained from naming Tehran until it has some concrete proof from intelligence agencies, notes The Guardian. Amid tensions running high in the Gulf, the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to visit Tehran to prevent the crisis from escalating.
