U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with the New York Times, said that the negotiations over a proposed border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border would be a “waste of time” if Democrats refuse to approve $5.7 billion funding for the physical barrier on the frontier.

The Trump government and the Democrats have failed to budge on the issue of border wall funding, with the impasse leading to a partial government shutdown for 35 days, the longest in U.S. history, writes the BBC.

Despite unrelenting opposition from the Democrats, Trump vowed to build the wall, hinting that he could declare a national emergency to extract the money for the barrier. The U.S. Congress must come up with a plan that’s agreeable to both the parties by February 15, failing which the government could slide into another partial shutdown, reports Reuters.
