U.S. President Donald Trump, in two tweets on Sunday, warned Turkey of economic devastation if it attacks Kurdish forces in Syria after the withdrawal of American troops while demanding the Kurds not to “provoke” Ankara either.

America’s military alliance with the People's Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia in northern Syria, has been a cause of friction between Washington and Turkey, which considers the outfit as a terrorist module, notes the BBC.

Trump’s blunt warning prompted a swift response from Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s spokesman, who called on the U.S. to honor its strategic alliance with Ankara and not be driven by “terrorist propaganda,” reports The Guardian.

The president’s remarks came as U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visits the Middle East allies to reassure them that the Syria pullout would not weaken their security.
