China on Friday called on Washington to withdraw U.S. sanctions on its military for purchasing jets and missiles from Russia or be prepared to “bear the consequences.”

In a message that resonated the Chines sentiments, Russia warned the U.S. against “playing with fire,” accusing it of attempting to ratchet up tensions and undermining global stability, notes the BBC.

The U.S. defends new sanctions on the Chinese military, saying that the action is not aimed at subduing other countries’ defense capabilities but to hold Russia accountable for its “malign activities,” including its interference in the American elections, reports CNN.
