After Helsinki fiasco, Trump invites Putin to Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump met Russian leader Vladimir Putin at Helsinki summit.

After embarrassing his own intelligence agencies by siding with Moscow at the Helsinki summit earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump plunged the political circles into disbelief as he invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit Washington.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats welcomed the news of Trump’s invitation to Putin with a “startled laughter,” writes the BBC. The U.S. president has faced a barrage of bipartisan criticism at home for his abject surrender to Putin, even forcing the administration to swing into damage-control mode with glaring flip-flops on Trump’s comments.

Trump’s move is being viewed as a “daring rebuttal” to widespread flak for his disastrous one-to-one summit with the Russian leader, notes Reuters.
