Turkey’s leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been re-elected as the country’s president, a victory that hands him sweeping powers to control the cabinet, make judicial appointments and issue decrees with the force of law.

Critics fear that the new political apparatus in Turkey, which has the post of prime minister scrapped, will heavily concentrate power in one person’s hands in the absence of checks and balances that feature in other executive presidencies like France or the U.S., writes the BBC.

Erdogan’s victory speech on Monday was characterized by a “combative tone,” as the leader pledged to fight terrorist organizations and to bolster the country’s “international prestige,” reports The Guardian.
