A coalition of Saudi-led forces launched a fierce offensive on Yemen’s rebel-held port of Hudaydah on Wednesday, in a move that could worsen the humanitarian crisis in the region’s poorest country.

The all-out assault against Iran-aligned Houthi rebels came after the militias failed to withdraw from the region despite a deadline set by the exiled Yemeni government, notes the BBC.

The ground operation, named “Golden Victory,” was supported by coalition warplanes pounding the Houthi fortifications around the heavily guarded port city that houses nearly 600,000 people and forms a key route for food and aid supplies to Yemenis, reports Reuters.
