Are plants conscious? Do plants have a mind? The answers to these intriguing questions depend on how the term consciousness is defined.

Environmental scientists and philosophers have diverging opinions, with one school of thought attributing plants’ knowledge of their environment to their consciousness while others view this awareness just as a trait of any living organism and not a sign of consciousness, notes Gizmodo.

Evolutionary ecologist, Monica Gagliano, in her upcoming book, entitled “Thus Spoke the Plant,” makes a controversial claim that plants might possess intelligence, memory and learning, although the mechanism may be dissimilar to those in humans and animals, reports Forbes.
