John Down, a former lawyer for U.S. President Donald Trump, said that Special Counsel Robert Mueller threatened to issue a subpoena for the leader if he declined to face investigators in the Russia probe.

Mueller’s remark came during a meeting in March after Trump’s lawyers insisted that the president was under no obligation to face questioning over the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, writes the BBC.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump criticized the leak of a list of 49 questions, which his legal team anticipates, would be asked to the president in a face-to-face interview with the investigators, notes The Guardian.
