A grim report by RAND Corporation warns that artificial intelligence could significantly increase the risk of nuclear war by 2040, as this technology equips the world powers to undermine the very foundations of nuclear stability.

The paper by the nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization examined the link between AI and nuclear security, keeping the guarantee of “mutually assured destruction (MAD)” at the center, writes Gizmodo.

MAD, the logic that keeps one side from launching a first strike on an equally armed adversary, wouldn’t work to maintain nuclear stability if technological equilibrium is disturbed, which would be the case, courtesy AI-equipped infrastructure, reports Science Daily.
