Astro Teller, the leader of Alphabet’s X lab, has revealed that the Google’s parent brand is exploring ways of combining artificial intelligence with other technologies like robotics and drones to automate agriculture and dramatically boost food production.

Teller explained potential applications of AI in agriculture citing examples like the technology assisting farmers in planning crops in environments that are adapting to climate change or enhancing their knowhow of harvesting and irrigation practices, notes MIT Technology Review.

AI could present a meaningful solution in tackling crop waste, an unwieldy problem as 20 to 40 percent of yield is lost to diseases and pest every year, writes Engadget.
