The first fatal crash of Uber’s self-driving car in Arizona on Sunday virtually jolted the autonomous vehicle industry and the technology advocates out of a state of inertia that conveniently overlooks some vital sidelines in the rush to deploy so called robot cars on the streets.

The accident delivers a loud and clear message that autonomous car technology is yet not ready for large-scale deployment and must be given more time for evolution, notes MIT Technology Review.

The company may avoid legal ramifications by settling the case out of court but it’s a wakeup call for AI vehicle developers to reconsider their systems with a fresh perspective that gives weightage to human lives and ethics.
