U.S. retail giant Walmart has filed a patent for autonomous robot bees, which will serve as sensor-laden vectors carrying pollen from one plant to another, assisting natural forces in pollination.

The move indicates Walmart’s plans to foray into agriculture to make its food supply chain more self-reliant as the retail eyes expansion of its grocery delivery this year to over 800 stores, notes Science Alert.

Walmart pursues five other patents aimed at farm automation, including drones that spot and shoot pests in the fields and the ones that just hover around to scare away birds, writes Geek.com.
