You are gulping down thousands of plastic particles per liter of bottled water, warns a study that tested 259 water bottles from 11 brands sold across nine countries, including the U.S. The shocking revelation prompted the World Health Organization to launch a review into the potential risks of plastic in potable water.

The analysis, a collaborative effort by the State University of New York at Fredonia and non-profit journalism organization Orb Media, hasn’t been peer-reviewed and is yet unpublished in any of the journals, writes The Guardian.

The International Bottled Water Association rejected the findings of the report, which it claimed, are not based on sound science and unnecessarily scare consumers, notes USA Today.
