In its first attempt to quantify the economic size of the outdoor recreational industry in the U.S., a preliminary report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) found that the sector contributed $374 billion to the country’s economy leaving behind the mining business that brought $260 billion that year.

The findings of the report underscore the worth of public lands over the oils and minerals extracted from them, notes Earther.

The stats equip policymakers, business owners, and the managers of public lands and waters with fact-based insight to make informed decisions over tapping the economic potential of outdoor recreational activities.
