U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Monday that Washington is open to diplomatic engagements with North Korea while simultaneously ramping up pressure on the “rogue state’s” economy.

The unified strategy of “maximum pressure and engagement,” as agreed between Seoul and Washington, marks a major transition from the Trump administration’s previous efforts at reining in N. Korea’s nuclear ambitions, notes CNBC.

The deepening rapprochement between the two Koreas bares open a “policy disconnect” between Seoul and Washington, writes The Guardian. While South Korea seeks to avert a war in the region, the U.S. aims to raze the North’s nuclear arsenal.
