U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first State of the Union address to Congress, hailed a “new American moment” as he urged national unity while trumpeting his hardline policies on immigration.

Trump’s speech received a cheerful applause from the Republicans while Democrats left the House of Representatives with “thinly veiled contempt,” reflecting the general anguish over a tumultuous year of the White House marred with controversies and attacks on freedom of press, writes The Guardian.

In his one-hour-and-20-minute speech, Trump insisted on a border wall with Mexico but offered an olive branch to Democrats, who have been incensed by his anti-immigrant policies, notes the BBC.
