An AI “think tank” to guide new unmanned spacecraft

NASA is funding a research project at the University of Akron in Ohio, which seeks to develop an AI-based blockchain system for unmanned spacecraft to let them “think” on their own when faced with emergency situations such as debris threat or passing meteorites.

Such technology could be valuable in space exploration as it overcomes the hurdle of “transmitted instructions lag,” which hampers spacecraft’s ability to react swiftly to any change in its surroundings, writes Futurism.

The infusion of AI-based cognitive technologies into space communication systems will give a new thrust to space exploration by ramping up their autonomy and efficiency, notes The Hindu
