Blockchain, a technology that can be used to authenticate transactions of any nature, could be a revolutionary force in combating climate change. LO3 Energy, a Brooklyn-based startup, is using this technology to help rooftop solar owners auction off their excess power locally, eliminating the need for a middleman.

This decentralized nature of Blockchain lets communities connect and work out “bottom-up” solutions instead of passively following the “top-down” policies of politicians, writes Futurism.

One of the potential uses of Blockchain could be in controlling carbon emissions by simplifying carbon trading, given its promise to handle processes more effectively and in more democratized way than most existing centralized systems, notes Popular Science.
