Eight people were killed and 11 others injured after a 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant plowed a rented truck into cyclists and pedestrians on a bike path near the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City on Tuesday.

The attacker, who got off the truck and shouted “Allahu Akbar” slogan, was shot by a police officer and arrested after the rampage, the deadliest terror attack the city has faced since the 11 September strike, writes the BBC.

The authorities also recovered a note from the truck, attributing the assault to terror outfit Islamic State, notes CNN. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the rampage by “a deranged person” and ordered the Department of Homeland Security to “step up” vetting measures.
