China’s ruling Communist Party unanimously passed an amendment to its constitution on Tuesday enshrining President Xi Jinping’s political “thought” into its charter, a development that catapults the leader to the same league as the founder of modern China, Mao Zedong.

“Xi Jinping Thought” on the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics may sound a “vague rhetoric” but its incorporation in the ruling party’s constitution strengthens the President’s grip on power for invariably an indefinite spell, notes the BBC.

Xi’s recent predecessors have their ideologies enshrined in the party’s constitution but none had their names directly attached to directly attached, writes Reuters
