China’s military braces for a major overhaul of the top leadership, a development that offers President Xi Jinping an opportunity to plant his confidantes in key positions at a party congress that kickstarts on October 18.

Based on the names to be axed from military’s top positions, speculations are ripe that the commission, which is a key military decision-making body of 11 members, might be streamlined and curtailed to 5 members, with Xi continuing as its chairman, writes Reuters.

Also, there are talks in the political circles of Beijing that Xi might defy the convention to cling to power for 10 more years, rather than five, notes Quartz.
