German automaker Audi’s portfolio of electric vehicles will soon have cars with thin, flexible solar cells integrated on their roofs, an addition that will ramp up their range besides aligning them better with sustainability principles.

Audi has teamed up with Chinese solar-cell specialist Hanergy for the project, which for now, harness solar energy to power air-conditioning or seat heaters in the cars but in future it could directly charge the traction battery, delivering sustainable, emission-free mobility, reports CNBC.

Amid all the excitement over the next generation electric vehicles, Audi believes that future cars may be more reliant on fuel cells than batteries, notes Dezeen.
