The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and its ability to outsmart humans continues to surprise us. In the latest development, researchers at Harvard University and the University of Vermont have developed a machine learning algorithm that can spot signs of depression in an individual by just sifting through their Instagram photos.

The AI system has displayed 70 percent accuracy in diagnosing depression against 42 percent success rate of general practitioners, who analyze patients through in-person evaluations, notes Seeker.

The study holds promise as it highlights a potentially new role of social media in timely diagnosing people with mental health problems, writes Daily Mail.
