Dubai, gearing up for the World Expo 2020, has installed its beaches with smart, solar-powered “palm trees” that are multi-utility points serving as Wi-Fi hotspots, battery recharge stations in addition to offering a host of security and emergency features.

The “palm trees,” developed as part of “smart city” initiative, are equipped with specially designed solar panels making them entirely power autonomous, writes Design Boom.

The smart palms, seen as Dubai’s small first step towards building a greener economy, have garnered praise from beachgoers, who love the shade in scorching conditions as they juice up their gadgets, notes Reuters.
