Ahead of an expected demonstration by Palestinians over tight security measures at al-Aqsa mosque, Israeli police issued fresh directives banning Muslim men under the age of 50 from entering the compound of the contested holy site in Jerusalem.

Security arrangements have been beefed up at the religious complex amid simmering tensions sparked by a shootout that left two Israeli policemen dead, writes Sky News.

The religious site, considered holy by both Muslims and Jews, has seen daily clashes after Israeli police deployed metal detectors, which Palestinians view as a breach of status quo Muslim rights, notes Al Jazeera.
