In a big leap for quantum physics, Chinese researchers have teleported a photon from earth to a satellite orbiting more than 500 km away in space.

The technique of instantaneously transferring the properties of one particle to another has been around since 1990s but this is the first time teleportation has been realized over such a long distance, writes USA Today.

The breakthrough sets the stage for more efficient and secure internet of the future, notes Seeker. To put it in the words of one of the researchers, “This is evolutionary, not revolutionary.”
