China, infamous for its smoggy, toxic air and its frantic reliance on fossil fuels, has now emerged as the world’s biggest producer of solar power, clocking 77.42 gigawatts by the end of the year 2016.

While China has made significant progress in embracing alternative sources of energy over the last two years, the country’s solar power constitutes just one percent of its total energy output, writes Digital Trends.

The country's National Energy Administration plans to install 110 gigawatts by 2020, which will raise China’s use of non-fossil fuel energy from 11 percent now to 20 percent by 2030, notes Engadget.
