South Korea began trial against impeached president Park Geun-hye on Tuesday over charges that she accepted bribes, leaked state secrets and abused her powers to seek political favors from some of the country’s top businesses including Samsung.

Park, S. Korea’s first female leader, faces life imprisonment if the allegations leveled against her are proven true, notes the BBC.

Park, who still has staunch supporters despite her steep fall from grace, has denied any wrongdoing and has blamed her political opponents for framing her, notes The Washington Post. The trial is expected to last for months, with surveys showing widespread backing for the prosecution of the tainted leader.
