Amid growing tensions after the U.S. sent its aircraft carrier towards the waters off the Korean Peninsula, China’s President Xi Jinping called his American counterpart Donald Trump, urging him to exercise restraint in dealing with North Korea.

Xi reiterated Beijing’s commitment to working with the concerned parties for denuclearization of the peninsula while opposing any action that breaches U.N. Security Council resolutions, writes The Guardian.

The call from Xi comes after repeated nudges from Trump, who has been pushing China to take stronger actions against North Korea, notes The New York Times. The development also indicates China’s fear that that the tensions in the region could soon blow into an outright military conflict.
