A woman covers her nose with her veil from blood smell at the scene of an explosion targeting an open-air beer garden at Enugu Road in the downtown Sabon Gari neighbourhood of Kano on July 30, 2013.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, governor of Kano state, was not hurt in the attack, although some local officials claim it was ordered as punishment: the governor is a prominent defector from embattled President Goodluck Jonathan's party. No group has yet claimed responsbility for the attack, and analysts see it as a harbinger of further political violence in the run-up to Nigeria's elections.
