Google X, the secretive research department of the company, has bought Makani Power, a group that develops kite-powered wind turbines. The acquisition will bring Makani's "robot kites" more fully under the wing of Google's renewable energy project as the search giant had previously invested $15 million into the technology. The green energy startup recently performed its first autonomous flight of turbine-mounted machines.
