VoIP apps threaten SMS messaging?

Mobile carriers' data plans that include voice calls and SMS messaging are potentially being gutted by the ever-popular VoIP application. Apps such as Skype, WhatsApp, ooVoo enable users to text for free, lessening their dependency on carrier plans, and a recent study indicates that VoIP app usage is surpassing that of traditional SMS.
