According to Pakistani intelligence, nearly half of Afghan Taliban fighters released from jail have rejoined the insurgency. The revelation calls into question efforts by the Pakistan government to foster peace negotiations between the Taliban and Kabul. The need for a lasting peace deal is becoming more pressing in advance of a scheduled U.S. and NATO troop pullout from Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
