Individual consumption is literally choking the Earth. A new study estimates the residents’ carbon dioxide emissions in 13,000 cities only to come across a disturbing figure - 20 percent of humanity’s carbon footprint is originating from the population of just 100 cities.

The study gives a comprehensive insight into cities’ carbon footprints by digging into the macrolevel, unlike previous estimates that tally up factors like the emissions associated with energy production, business, industry and transportation, notes Scientific American.

The study adopted a unique approach using income data as a proxy for emissions and combining it with population statistics to attribute carbon footprint to a city. The findings indicate that small steps at local levels can help cities slash their carbon emissions by one third, reports Deutsche Welle.
