Taking on a seemingly invincible rival, Rhode Island has filed a lawsuit against 21 Big Oil companies for knowingly contributing to climate change and degrading the state’s environment, economy, communities and life of residents.

Activists and environmentalists hail the move as a “watershed moment” for climate liability as this is the first occasion a lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a state and its citizens fighting Big Oil firms, notes Eco Watch.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages from Big Oil companies holding them responsible for the costs incurred by taxpayers for rebuilding shorelines, roads and other properties damaged by rising tides, which in turn are linked to fossil fuel production, reports Reuters.
