South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir met rebel leader Riek Machar for the first time since a peace deal between the two adversaries fell apart in August 2016.

The meeting hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed restores some sense of optimism for S. Sudan that has been reeling under a savage five-year civil war, notes Al Jazeera.

The international community, particularly the U.S., have been calling for an arms embargo on S. Sudan’s leadership to protect its civilians from a brutal, hostile conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in addition to displacing nearly 4 million people, reports The Washington Post.
