Machines are subservient entities with no reasoning and arguments of their own, and humans are their masters privileged with the art of debate and persuasion. Now IBM’s new AI is upending the whole concept as it debates humans in conventional club-style discussions, presenting its arguments in a fairly impressive manner.

Recently, IBM’s “Project Debater” artificial intelligence system engaged in a verbal duel with Israeli debate champion Noa Ovadia, advocating the government subsidy for space exploration, a contest it lost but not without churning out a decent opening statement and some compelling rebuttals, reports USA Today.

In the extempore debate, the AI system took a couple of minutes to glean related data and string a coherent argument in favour of the topic and to respond almost in real time to the counter views from the human rival, notes The Verge.
