The ten finalists for the $100,000 Engaged Cities Award, sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Michael Bloomberg’s American Cities Initiative, share a handful of traits with inventive startups in the way they approach local challenges, including transparency and access to healthy food.

Cities of Service, a New York City–based independent nonprofit, observes that successful cities resort to a collaborative mechanism to solving their problems, whereby citizens’ role isn’t limited to just the election times, writes Fast Company.

These finalist cities lay testimony to the fact that the insights, diverse talents and creative energy of community members can work in tandem with elected functionaries to propel cities on the path of progress while meeting the challenges head-on, reports State Scoop.
