In an apparently “deliberate” act bringing back the haunting memories of recent vehicle assaults by Islamic State supporters, a van plowed into the crowd across a sidewalk in northern Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 15 others on Monday.

The suspect, Alek Minassian, 25, was detained by the police after a tense face-off following the attack and is due to be produced before the court on Tuesday, writes the BBC. The motive of the assault remains unclear, and the authorities didn’t rule out links to terrorism.

Minassian, reportedly a student of computer software at a college in Toronto, hails from the nearby town of Richmond Hill and was previously unknown to the authorities, reports The Guardian.
