An ambitious XPrize contest has set $10 million as the award money for anyone who develops a real-life robot avatar that can be remotely controlled from 100km away while giving a complete sense of the surroundings to the untrained operators.

The competition, sponsored by the Japanese airline ANA, is accepting entries from teams by the end of January 2019, notes New Scientist.

The challenge aims to develop a technology to let one physically experience another geographic location, an ability that will speed up emergency response in natural disaster scenarios without exposing rescuers to hazardous environments, reports New Atlas.
