South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has refused to budge after the ruling African National Congress gave him a formal ultimatum to step down within 48 hours or be prepared to being stripped of the office.

Zuma, whose nine years in power have been dogged by corruption allegations and stagnated economy, would face a no-confidence vote in the parliament if he resists the party’s mandate, notes The Guardian.

The ANC’s decision to “recall” the tainted president came after a marathon meeting that lasted for over 13 hours until early Tuesday, which signals its wariness over deepening rifts in the party, notes Reuters.
