Salah Abdeslam, the only surviving suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks, maintained a stoic silence as a Belgian court opened trial on charges related to a shootout with police officers shortly before his arrest in 2016.

Abdeslam, who has remained tight-lipped since his detention, faces up to 40 years in prison for attempted murder in relation to terrorism, writes Reuters. Abdeslam’s silence in the court comes as a disappointment not only for prosecutors but for Parisians who are still clueless about how and why the grizzly attacks were organized.

French agencies believe that Abdeslam was a key accomplice in the Paris attacks, which left 130 dead and hundreds injured in a gunfire and suicide bombings, notes the BBC.
