Disposable, single-use coffee mugs are a real menace for environmentalists. Nearly 2.5 billion of these paper cups pile up at landfill sites in the U.K. every year, and this number just rockets with passing time.

Also, disposable coffee cups cannot be recycled owing to an interior coating that keeps them from leaking, so British lawmakers are mulling a “latte levy” tax of 25 pence per cup, which will be a gentle nudge to the customers to bring their own reusable mugs at cafes, notes Green Matters.

Starbucks, one of the biggest culprits behind disposable cups deluge, says it’s already incentivizing customers with a 25 pence discount if they use a recyclable cup, writes CNN Money.
