Artificial corals created to save the natural ones

Jan 01, 2018, 6:51 AM EST

Rapid climate change is a threat to entire marine ecosystem as it destructs coral reefs that support a wide variety of aquatic life. A scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Melbourne is resorting to genetic manipulations to create corals resistant to harsh environment.

The novel process is an example of “human-assisted evolution” and not genetic modification of organism as the researchers introduce no material with altered genes, notes Green Matters.

One of the projects to build artificial reefs is already underway in Lake Pelto, south of Cocodrie, where two to three acres of corals will be created with $150,000, notes Houmatoday.com.
