Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who triggered a political firestorm by pardoning former leader Alberto Fujimori, urged people to accept the decision even as angry protesters took to streets in the capital Lima raising “No to the pardon!” slogans for the second day.

Kuczynski dismissed the allegations that the former authoritarian leader was granted clemency in barter to save him from impeachment over a graft scandal last week, notes the BBC.

Kuczynski, for the first time, defended Fujimori’s regime of the 1990s, saying that the ex-leader led the country to the path of progress despite legal transgressions regarding democracy and human rights, reports Reuters.
