It’s fascinating how artificial intelligence continues to surprise us with new capabilities. This time around, a team from Stanford University has developed an AI system that combed through 22 million Google Street View images of cars to accurately predict the political leanings of people inhabiting a place.

The AI was trained to first identify the vehicles in the images, classify them by make, model and year, and analyze how a car type correlated to political stance in an area, a data-crunching process that a human could have taken 15 years to complete, writes Popular Science.

The experiment reveals the efficacy of AI in analyzing mind boggling datasets, although the team admitted it’s not too accurate to replace conducting a census, notes Digit.
