Parisian officials banned all cars from the streets on Sunday, encouraging ramblers, cyclists and roller-bladers to come out and enjoy a fumeless, calm atmosphere on safe and traffic-free roads.

Although the French capital has been organizing car-free days in the past, this is the first occasion when the entire city participated in the event with just emergency vehicles, buses and taxis being an exception from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., notes Chicago Tribune.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s came to power on the plank of curbing air pollution and decongesting the city’s roads, writes The Washington Post.
