In the U.S. where just 35 percent of all waste is recycled, a British consulting and product development company, Cambridge Consultants, is leveraging tech innovation to draw people close to recycling bins.

The company has developed a “smart” recycling bin, equipped with computer vision to scan and sort different types of plastic waste, thus helping the user identify what can go into the container and what can’t, writes Smithsonian.com.

The smart bin pairs with a smartphone app and also incentivizes the users with reward points, which can be redeemed for a merchandize depending upon the owner or sponsor of the bin.

Similarly, Trashbot , developed by CleanRobotics, is a smart waste bin that upgrades itself as it collects and sorts more and more recyclables over time, notes Gineers Now
